Mad Rush For Police Recruitment

Hundreds of unemployed youth yesterday besieged the Sunyani branch of GCB Bank to buy police recruitment forms said to have been advertised online.

As early as 5:30 am yesterday, there were long winding queues in front of the bank even before staff came to work.

According to the applicants, they were instructed to purchase application vouchers at a cost of GH¢100 each to obtain serial numbers and personal identification numbers (PINs) which would enable them to access and fill the forms online.

Enlistments into the police and other security agencies are the only job openings in the country, in view of the rising unemployment occasioned by freeze in the public sector employment in keeping with IMF conditionalities.

Over 50,000 people are expected to apply but less than 2,000 may be selected.

In most of the selection processes, the ruling party activists are given preference over other applicants.

According to some of the prospective applicants who spoke to Daily Guide, bank officials were dealing with people through the back door whilst a lot of them who stood in queues since dawn were still standing in the scorching sun in front of the bank.

Photocopy of the forms sighted by Daily Guide titled, ‘Police recruitment 2016,’ indicated that they were signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Beatrice Vib Sanziri and closing date for submission is 31st May 11, 2016. Applicants are however, strongly advised not to purchase the forms through any middle man because the police administration has not contracted anybody to do that.

Previous exercises were fraught with ‘connection men,’ including senior police officers.

Last year, Police Director General for Human Resource, COP Patrick Timbillah, was interdicted over a recruitment scam. As at now there is no finality on his case and his fate hangs in the balance.
