Strange Insects Invade Communities In Bia West

Strange insects have invaded some farming communities in the Bia West District of the Western Region, causing nuisance at homes and other public places.

The millipede-like insects had invaded Nyamebekyere Number Two, Adjoafua and its environs.

Mr Kojo Owusu, a resident at Adjoafua, told the media that the smelly insects are making lives uncomfortable.

This he said had created fear and panic in the communities, saying although they have not caused any harm to the people, their presence is disgusting.

Meanwhile, Mr Alexander Ofori, the District Chief Executive for the area, confirmed to the Ghana News Agency on Friday that he had dispatched officers from the Environmental Health Unit of the Assembly to the affected communities and waiting for their report.

He added that the Assembly had also contacted the Quality Control Division of the Ghana Cocoa Board to support them with insecticides to spray the affected communities.

Mr Michael Azumah, the District Health Director, said although he has heard about the presence of the insects in the district, nobody from the affected communities had reported any harm caused by them however, he is monitoring the situation.

Bia West District is one of the 22 districts in the Western Region located in the northern sector and shares boundaries with Sefwi-Juaboso District in the south, Bia East District in the north and La Cote d’Ivoire in the west with Sefwi-Essam, as the district capital.

It has a a population of about 70,000 who are predominantly cocoa and crop farmers.
