The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has appealed to vehicle drivers to give way for fire tenders to pass during emergency cases.
According to the GNFS, some drivers refused to allow fire tenders to pass to attend to emergencies, a situation which affected their work.
The Amasaman Fire Commanding Officer, Divisional Officer Grade One Abraham Nii Dodoo, said this during a fire safety education campaign by the Amasaman Fire Station on Friday, for drivers in the Ga West Municipal Assembly.
The campaign was to educate the drivers on the ‘dos and don’ts’ in fire situations.
He said accessibility to fire scenes had also been a problem, and called on the authorities to help address the situation.
DOI Dodoo also urged the public to desist from prank calls stating that such practice affected their activities.
DOI Dodoo said his outfit had recorded 46 fire outbreaks from January to date this year.
He gave the breakdown as follows: domestic 17, bush fires 16, electrical 3, accident six and Industrial 4.
The Accra Regional Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Ebenezer Simpson urged the drivers to have fire extinguishers in their vehicles to help during fire outbreaks.
He said there was the need to ensure that fire safety issues was made a priority in all activities.
ACFO Simpson said the education would be ongoing to ensure that the public was educated on fire safety issues.
“Fire safety is a shared responsibility and behooves every citizen to ensure that lives and properties were saved in the country,” he added
He urged the public to collaborate with the Service to ensure safety at all times.
A fire safety officer, Divisional Officer II Patience Osei called on the public to immediately call on the GNFS emergency lines such as 192, 0299340558, and 0299340325.
“There are times people delay in calling us, they try to quench the fire by themselves and if it gets out of hand they rather contact us which would be too late,” she stressed.
She urged the public to switch off all electrical gadgets and pull them out from the sockets when getting out from home or the offices.
The secretary of the Amasaman Ghana Private Road and Transport Union, Albert Elolo commended the GNFS for the education and called for more of such collaborations.
