An emergency meeting which was called at the instance of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy has been held with the management of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).   

Described as fruitful, the meeting was specifically to discuss the recent electricity bill irregularities which have left many electricity consumers across the country very unhappy.  

The meeting was held under closed door at the Parliament House in Accra on Friday, May 27, 2016

Players in the power sector who were present at the meeting are said to have included the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), deputy Minister of Power, John Jinapor, and other officials of the Ministry of Power.

According to sources, although the meeting failed to provide any definite solution to all the concerns raised over the ECG meters and the billing software which has brought about untold hardship on consumers, there was a common understanding on the way forward.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, described their meeting with the power distributor as fruitful despite the latter’s failure to provide the Committee with all the answers it expected.

He said, “we agreed on problems that confront them (ECG). We are finding a way out to resolving them and we have agreed that they bring us extra documents whiles we also invite people outside ECG to help us address the problem.”

Alhaji Sorogho opined that the committee was well aware of the concerns of consumers and gave the assurance that they were working around the clock to rectify all the problems in connection with metering and billing.

“It has been agreed by both parties that there is over-billing and other discrepancies thus we should all work very fast to correct the anomaly,” Hon. Sorogho reiterated.

Meanwhile, the Special Taskforce of the Ministry of Power which was set up to audit the ECG meters over concerns of over-billing has begun work in the Legon District of Accra.

The taskforce is made up of officials of PURC, the Energy Commission (EC), the Ministry of Power and ECG.

The taskforce is to run tests on both old and new meters to ascertain the case of high consumption and charges.
