Yankah cautions parents

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG) Professor Kwesi Yankah has asked parents to reduce their huge expenditure on funerals and invest heavily in their children�s education for them to become useful future citizens. He said the massive expenditure in funerals, suggested that parents loved the dead more than their living children. Prof. Yankah made the request at a durbar to climax the Annual Akwambo Festival of the chiefs and people of Agona Duakwa in the Central Region. He noted that education is the only key to develop the nation and reduce poverty among the people. The Pro-Vice Chancellor expressed regret that the region, which used to be the centre of quality education has now fallen below the education standard and appealed to the, district assemblies and other stakeholders to reverse the trend. Professor Yankah observed that Nana Kojo Amoakwa I, maiden chief of Duakwa established a school in the town without support from the Central Government and asked parents in the town to adopt new strategies to help promote education. Mr John Kwesi Agyabeng, Member of Parliament for Agona East called for unity among family members to ensure the rapid development of the town. He said part of his share of the District Assemblies� Common Fund would be used to support brilliant but needy students in the area to pursue secondary and tertiary education. Nana Kojo Amoakwa II, Chief of Duakwa said about 10 brilliant but needy students had benefited from the educational fund instituted by the chiefs and elders. He called on corporate bodies, and public-spirited citizens of Duakwa at home and abroad to come and donate generously to the fund. Nana Amoakwa called for unity, understanding and harmony among the people to facilitate the development of the town.
