Retired Teachers Scramble For National Service Jobs

The Volta Regional Coordinator of the National Service Scheme, Mr. Ken Gyenfi has called on the government to maintain and strengthen the voluntary service programme for retired teachers in the country. He said the retired teachers demonstrated high interest and commitment in the programme, which was indicative of the fact that they were still strong to continue teaching. Mr. Gyenfi made the call in an interview with The Chronicle, at the regional National Services Secretariat in Ho, where hundreds of retired teachers had to check their postings. Ken Gyenfi called for more government support to make the programme more attractive and also fill the numerous vacancies in the classrooms. He observed that the voluntary teaching programme was one of the social intervention that would not only help in keeping the aged, who are ready to accept postings to the rural areas active, but would also ensure a healthy lifestyle for them. Mr. Gyenfi said the retired teachers had accumulated enough experience over the years, which would positively impact on the National Service personnel and newly-trained teachers who have started their career. He continued that the presence of the retired teachers would definitely serve as role model to young teachers, and inspire them to be more dedicated to the teaching profession. Mr. Gyenfi said the retired teachers, most of them examiners, would help pupils and students in their studies, to reduce the high number of failure at the basic level.
