PHOTOS: Mafi Atitekpo Pupils Drink Dirty Water For Survival

Students of Mafi Atitekpo D.A Junior High/Senior High Schools in the Central Tongu District of the Volta region are in serious danger as students depend on a heavily polluted river for survival due to lack of potable water in the school.

According to the teachers who spoke with Kasapa FM’s host of ‘Yen nna’ show, Kwabena Bediako(IBK) the students drink from the polluted River Vugba which takes its source from River Volta.

The headteacher of the school, Mr. George Akporhor said the water situation is affecting academic standard since students use part of lesson time to search for water.

According to the head teacher, the only source of water that was provided for the school was a bore hole some 15 years ago which is currently out of service.

“It was an NGO who provided a borehole for the school 15 years ago and because the Community at the time didn’t have any good source of drinking water they all depended on that, but it has been faulty for sometime. That is the reason why they have all now resorted to drinking the Vugba River which is also very dirty and dangerous to the health of the pupil.”

He explained that, attempts by the school authority to get the District Assembly to come to provide borehole has proven futile.

Mr. Akporhor has therefore appealed to government, philanthropists and citizens of South Tongu  to come to the aid of the school and town.
