Fix Specific Date For Debate On Election Date Change Bill - Speaker

The Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Edward Doe Adjaho has asked the leadership of Parliament to make the house aware of the specific date on which the house will commence deliberation on the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill 2016 which seeks to change the date of election in the country from 7th December to the first Monday of November of an election year.

Even though a motion for the second reading of the bill was advertised in yesterday 19th July and today 20th July copies of the Order Paper of Parliament, the house could not commence debate on the bill hence the Speaker’s order to the leadership of Parliament.

It will be recalled that the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Legal and Parliamentary Affairs recently held a public forum to seek public opinion about the bill.

Rt Hon Edward Doe Adjaho said the country’s interest will be best served if the house deals with the bill as quickly as possible.
