The Ghana office of the Women in Law and Development in Africa (WILDAF) has called on the NDC government to fulfil its campaign promise of ensuring 40% women representation in government. It made the call at a seminar for the media on Affirmative Action Policy on women�s participation in democratic governance in the country.
The National Programmes Co-ordinator of WILDAF - Ghana, Bernice Sam noted that Ghana�s record on Women�s participation in governance is poor and the country should therefore bow its head in shame. This is because so far, only 19 out of the 230 MPs in Ghana are women, 4 out of the 19 cabinet Ministers are women and 11 out of 166 DCEs and MCEs who have been confirmed are women.
Bernice Sam said institutions and government must understand the issue of ensuring equal opportunities for various groups in the country as a development issue rather than political. The WILDAF - Ghana Programmes Officer in charge of governance Mr. Frank Wilson Bodza advocated election and appointment of more women into the district and Metropolitan assemblies by the electorate and government respectively.
