Residents of Damongo in the Northern Region are anxious because of clashes between supporters of two rival chiefs in the area over who has the right to take royalties from trucks transporting charcoal from a village called Sur.
Apparently, the houses of the Damongowura recognized by the Yagbonwura and another backed by Kuntunkure (land owners) are very close.
Supporters of the chief backed by Yagbonwura started the shootings in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the children of the Yagbonwura-backed Damongowura issued a royal ticket at the village to the truck driver but the supporters of the other chief intercepted the truck on reaching Damongo and tore the ticket into pieces.
The police were informed about the incident and after some discussions, the charcoal truck was released.
When the supporters of the Kuntunke backed Damongowura got home, they started hurling stones at the house of the other chief, destroying the roofing.
Reports indicated that two young men from the side of the Yagbonwura backed chief fired warning shots in the direction of the other group.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that some warriors from Kusawgu, where the current Yagbonwura hails from, have arrived in Damongo to give protection to their chief.
Damongo Police Commander ASP Opoku Agyemang, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the incident happened around 6 pm on Thursday and that the impasse between the two chiefs caused their supporters to throw stones at each other.
According to him, no arrests have been but the police were still investigating the matter.
He indicated that calm had returned to Damongo and that the police have taken over the area, especially the houses of the two chiefs.
“There is reinforcement coming from Tamale but as we speak everything is calm in Damongo at the moment,” he said.
ASP Opoku Agyemang stated that no casualty was recorded during the clashes between supporters of the two chiefs.
