Cabbie Get 13yrs over Ganja

A taxi driver would have to spend the next 13 years in prison for possessing 109 compressed substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The convict, Kwame Ofori aka Rice and three others-Dada, Alhaji Mustapha and Amo Quaye currently at large were said to have conspired to commit crime and unlawfully possessed the forbidden substance.

The prosecutor, DSP Kweku Bempah revealed that the accused was on August 29, 2016 at Adenta in Accra arrested with six large size of the substance without authority.

The court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh found the accused culpable and slapped him with a 13 year jail term to serve as a deterrent to others.

The facts of the case are that on the said day, at about 4pm, the Police Visibility Unit of the National Police Headquarters lead by ASP Mohammed Adamu Awal were on their normal routine duty at Adenta-Dodowa road intersection when Hyundai Grace H100 with registration GT 4680-14 driven by Kwame with his mate Dada was coming from Dodowa direction.

The police signaled them to stop but they sped off and the team chased them to the SDA Junction where the driver veered off the road to a rough road, put off the engine, removed the ignition key and escaped with is mate, Dada.

The Team conducted a search on the vehicle and found six large size parcels and 109 smaller compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The vehicle was subsequently towed to the Adenta police station and on September 3, 2016, Kwame was arrested and in his caution statement said the substance belongs to Dada, Alhaji.

The stuff was brought from Akosombo area on a sprinter bus driven by Amo which broke down on the road and Kwame went to convey it for him.
