Aveyime-Atitekpo- Mafi-Dove feeder-road which was commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday, August 6, 2016 has started deteriorating haphazardly which is posing a threat to lives and properties in the area, Today investigations have gathered.
A recent visit by Today to Mafi-Dove saw chiefs and residents of communities along Mafi-Dove, Afelekpo, Atitekpo and Devime as well as commuters complain bitterly about the shoddy nature of work being carried on the road by the two constructing firms, First Sky Company Limited and KADACON Company Limited contractors, blaming the contractors and the Feeder Road Consultant of not following due processes at the time of constructing the road.
They could not fathom why some portions of the recently constructed feeder road, particularly from Battor-Aveyime linking the Afelekpo-Agbenyorkope-Atitekpo to Mafi-Dove, has started deteriorating haphazardly after two months of commissioning.
That, according to the residents, was as a result of incompatible nature on those portions of the road, stressing that the depression on the road was creating a lot of inconveniences to the commuters on these communities.
The Sogakope-Mafi Dove main junction feeder road connects to the Devime, Mepe-Degorme-Battor and Sege-Accra Highway was the World Bank loan facility project with the support of government of Ghana.
They complained about the lack of enough gutters on the feeder road to protect it, noting that the shoulders of the road were poorly constructed, which, according to them, has started destroying at the fast spate.
“We are raising these concerns for the World Bank and the government of Ghana to immediately hold the contractors who have constructed the Mafi-Dove Junction feeder road that links to Sogakope-Accra Highway responsible for the shoddy works they have done before they (the contractors) could officially hand over the work to the government of Ghana and World Bank,” the charged residents told Today.
Today gathered from the residents that the construction work on the road begun in July 2014 and completed just at the end of 2015, but several appeals to the contractors and consultant to excavate parts of the road within Dove, Devime, Atitekpo, Agbenyorkope, Afelekpo and Degorme townships have been ignored.
The Department of Urban Roads currently executed the project due to various calls to the government through the Central Tongu District Assembly to have the road fixed.
Speaker-after-speaker noted that their reason for the contractor to excavate the road within the said towns stemmed from the fact that parts of that stretch of road were muddy.
According to the residents, they also drew the attention of the contractors and consultant to the poorly built culverts and bridges, which, according to them, could easily be washed away anytime there was a heavy downpour on the road.
Similarly, the residents pointed out that “during the construction of the road linking Battor and Mepe under the regime of former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, the chiefs and people of the two traditional towns made similar request to the contractors and consultant due to the muddy nature of the areas.
They indicated that the request of the chiefs and people was granted by the contractors and consultant which outcome has contributed to the long life span of that road.
Against this backdrop, the residents appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to impress upon the contractors to rehabilitate those portions of the road which has started deteriorating.
They also called on government to impress upon contractors working on the various roads in the Volta Region to speed up work on the projects.
