NDC Revises Ashanti Vote Target To 1.5 Million

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched the Ashanti Region Campaign with a revision of its one million votes target to 1.5 million.

This ambitious target, according to NDC bigwigs, is the result of the ‘unprecedented’ massive turnout of supporters who thronged the Kumasi Jubilee Park on Saturday, to witness the launch of the campaign which was graced by the Vice-President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.

Operation million votes

The NDC had initially launched what it described as ‘Operation One Million Votes’ in the region but various speakers at the rally to launch the regional campaign expressed the conviction that the party was capable of achieving the desired 1.5 million votes in the general election.

In the 2012 presidential election, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) polled 1,531,152 representing 70.86 per cent while the NDC got 612, 616 representing 28.35 per cent.

But the Campaign Coordinator of the NDC, Mr Kofi Adams, urged party supporters in the region to work hard to ensure that the party achieved its objective of sending a signal to the NPP that the NDC was on course to break their (NPP) hegemony in the region.

Chanting NDC slogans such as ‘JM Toaso’ Mr Adams, who expressed amazement at the numbers in the Jubilee Park, said a research team the party commissioned to assess the NDC’s chances in the region established that the party would hit the 1.5 million target.

Introducing the 47 parliamentary candidates of the NDC to the people, he appealed to party supporters to vote to ensure that the party had a fair representation of parliamentarians from the Ashanti Region.

What also boosted the morale of support the NDC was enjoying from the region was when one Augustine Twumasi from the Adansi Asokwa Constituency, who announced his defection from the NPP to the NDC, declared his support for President John Mahama and the NDC.

A former National Organiser of the NDC, Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan, entreated the electorate not for be deceived by the plethora of promises of the NPP but rather vote for President Mahama who has a proven track record.

Vice-President

Mounting the stage to launch the campaign was the Vice-President, whose appearance sent the entire supporters into a jubilant mood dancing to the NDC signature campaign song ‘Mahama paper’ and chanting ‘Eye Zu, Eye Za’.

Mr Amissah-Arthur spoke of how impressed he was about the state of infrastructure development in the Kumasi Metropolis when he arrived in the city.

He said what the people could do for President Mahama in appreciation for the level of development in the metropolis was to retain him for another term to complete what he had started.
