The Electoral Commission (EC), the nation’s election management board, has been asked to take steps to address any administrative blunders that could undermine public confidence in the electoral system.

The Right Reverend Professor Osei Safo Kantanka, immediate-past Kumasi Diocesan Bishop of the Methodist Church, said lapses, seen in previous polls should not be repeated.

He was delivering a paper at a public lecture held in Kumasi on the topic “”Seeking peace and pursuing it in times of elections – a theological appraisal of Psalm 34:14”.

He labeled this year’s general election as “critical” and said it was therefore important for the EC to go the extra mile to “put its house in order to engender public trust.

The lecture was put together by the Valley View University and the goal was to help promote healthy political conversation ahead of the December 07 general election.

The Rt. Rev Prof Kantanka indicated that the nation had made significant progress over the years in its democratic practice and said this needed to be sustained.

He reminded everybody that they had a responsibility to combine their effort to safeguard the unity, peace and harmony of the society before, during and after the election.

He entreated political leaders to step back from doing anything that could divide and tear the people apart.
They should avoid deception - telling lies about their opponents to make them look bad in their desperate bid for power, he added.

The Rt. Rev Prof Kantanka asked that the election campaign should be substantive on message to aid voters to make the right decision on voting day.
