Protect Us Or Well Protect Ourselves: NPP

The police and other security agencies must provide the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its members all the necessary protection from attacks from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), otherwise the NPP will resort to its own means of protecting its members, the party’s Greater Accra regional chairman, Ishmael Ashitey, has warned.

“We will make sure that there is no time during this election period that we’ll go out there to attack anybody or do anything untoward. We expect the police and the security agencies to protect our members anytime they try to hurt or attack any of them. If the police and the security agencies are not prepared to give us that protection, I think we’ll protect ourselves,” Mr Ashitey told Prince Minkah on Class91.3FM’s Executive Breakfast Show on Monday, 14 November.

His comments follow Sunday’s clashes between supporters of the two parties in front of the Nima residence of the NPP’s flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, during which guns were fired.

Meanwhile, the Director of Communications of the Police, Superintended Cephas Arthur, has said a member of the security detail of the flag bearer of the NPP “pointed a gun” at the Commander of the Anti-Terrorism Unit of the Ghana Police Service during the clashes.

“After pointing the gun at him, he pointed it in the air and gave a warning shot and then dropped it…again and pointed it at him

“But for the exercise of maximum restraint and professionalism displayed by the police, we would have heard a different story today,” Supt Arthur told Prince Minkah on the Executive Breakfast Show.

He said so far no one had been arrested in connection with the clashes which got sparked after supporters of both parties converged on the vicinity of Mr Akufo-Addo’s Nima residence during their respective Keep Fit activities.

Both parties are accusing each other of starting the provocation.
