Teachers should be good role models in society

Mr Joseph K. Onyina, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, has reminded teachers on the need for them to remain as role models in society. He explained that, although there are many challenges confronting them, there is the need for them to remain focus as they continue to train and educate the nation's future leaders and manpower needs. Mr Onyina made the call when he inaugurated the Saint Paul's Catholic Church branch of the Catholic Teachers Association at Amakom in Kumasi at the weekend. The Regional Director of Education called on parents to support teachers towards the proper training and upbringing of children to enable them obtain the needed character formation and moral training that society expect. Mr Onyina expressed dissatisfaction about parents who shirk their responsibilities towards their children and turn round to accuse teachers of not training them well. Mr Joseph Kwasi Ampong, Regional Manager of the Catholic Education Unit, commended the teachers for the initiative to come together to form the association and urged them not to use it for only socialisation, but for the development of their members. He appealed to the government to increase funds meant for the educational units, to enable them to run and supervise the schools for effective teaching and learning. Mr Eric Kyei, President of the Association said the body aimed at providing economic, spiritual and educational development needs of the teachers as well as supporting the development of the church in general. He said as people who educate and train people, there was the need for the members to be well resourced spiritually, morally and rich in knowledge to enable them impact it to their children and students. Mr Kyie reminded teachers to always research and learning hard to enhance their professional competence.
