The Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwesimintsim Constituency in the Western Region, Joe Baidoo Ansah, has called on Ghanaians to promote the culture of reading in the country.
He said parents, in particular, must make a conscious effort of encouraging their wards to make reading an integral part of their learning process to facilitate the direction of their future after education.
Aside the role of parents, he said authorities in charge of the education sector could equally develop and promote reading programmes to make education in Ghana attractive.
The MP was speaking at the launch of Eduyal Foundation, an organisation geared towards supporting education and libraries in Takoradi.
He was of the view that reading should be adopted as an antidote to boredom even after school to assist people discover opportunities that are necessary to add value to their knowledge.
According to him, learning and knowledge acquisition are done through reading and observation and has the potential of defining the future.
"It is very important for us to read and also write because without reading, we cannot enhance our education. There are many things that are hidden and can only be discovered through reading," he stressed.
He said apart from providing companionship, reading contributes immensely to the broadening of one’s mind, builds one’s confidence and reduces negative tendencies.
