Adopt Positive Attitude Towards Studies And Rules And Regulations - UEW VC To New Students

The Vice chancellor of the University of education Winneba ,Prof. Mawutor Avoke has urged matriculated students to adopt positive attitude towards studies as well as the rules and regulations contained in their students' handbook.

Prof. Avoke disclosed this at the University's matriculation to usher in fresh students.

He said, by the close of admission for the 2016/2017 academic year, a total number of 9,932 were offered admission, at the close of registration for 2016/2017 academic year a total of 7,768 fresh students had registered for the various distance education programmes, which comprises 6,635 undergraduate students, 568 postgraduate students of the Institute for Education Development and Extension (IEDE) and 565 students of the Facilities of Technical and Vocational Education of the College of Technology Education of the University of Education, winnbea.

For the second session, a total number of 1,903 students from the Southern sector were matriculated and during the first session a total number of 1,770 students were also matriculated.

Today Friday 13th January, 2017, the University matriculated a total number of 4,095 distance students from the northern section.

The Vice Chancellor also explained that, the Center for Distance Education has introduced degree programmes in Basic Education, Early Childhood Education, Social Studies, English Language, Mathematics, Accounting and Human Resource Management for the 2016/2017 as new programmes for the University.

He further explained that, it is the aim of the distance education programme to give continuing students and prospective applicants the opportunity to access the university education conveniently at their doorsteps and also at manageable cost without sacrificing quality.

"In this regard, four new study centers which is located at Accra high school, Northern school of Business, Tamale, Offinso College of education, Offinso and Gbewaa College of education, Pusiga, has been established to bring education closer to students and this brings the total number of study centers to thirty-seven (37)," the Vice Chancellor stated.

Prof. Avoke stated, the university is aware of the financial challenges some of the students may encounter as they pursue their programmes so, in line with objective 10 of the strategic plan of the university which seek to expand access for the underprivileged, marginalized, persons living with disability and also person from the less endowed schools, financial support services have been made available for them.

The vice chancellor's scholarship fund for the Needy but brilliant students has been instituted to provide financial assistance to the students and last semester, sixty (60) beneficiaries have been recommended for the scholarship.

"While congratulating you for gaining admission into the University, I urge you to note that learning by distance entails a lots of challenges, particularly, for students who double up as full-time workers and parents, you may feel lonely sometimes as you study on your own without the usual campus atmosphere coupled with difficulty in having immediate access to study group members to interact with, as well as library for reference," he added. 

He disclosed that, as a distance education student, you are expected to be an independent learner and the results you attain are directly attributed to the effort you put into your studies. It is therefore, important that most of the work be done by you and tutorial session would serve as an avenue to supplement what they have read.

He also urged them to cultivate the habit of reading their modules before and after tutorial, he urged them to attend all tutorial session and form discussion groups to adequately prepare for their quizzes and examination.

He concluded by encouraging the sport men and women amongst them to register at their various study centers so, it would enable them to take advantage of the numerous sporting opportunities available to sports men and women both locall and internationally.
