Don’t Pay For New Fares Now – Transport Fare Review Committee Tells Passengers

The Transport Fare Review Committee has insisted that all commercial drivers and transport owners must not hasten to increase fares, asking them to maintain the current transport fares until further notice.

The Committee is billed to hold a biennial meeting, March, 30 where a decision on transport fares will be taken going forward.

Already some commercial drivers have increased fares, but the committee has warned that this is illegal, asking commuters not to pay any new fares.

“The practice is that we come out with official fares from the source of Road Transport Operators. And all that is happening in the system means that they are all illegal. They were not supposed to increase their fares without our consent. So we are telling the general public that we have not increased transport fares and all operators must adhere to our instructions.

We are not just looking on. For this reason we have asked the respective operators, mainly the G.P.R.TU.s and the transport owners that they should check their members and call them to order. We are monitoring and doing a bit of enforcement to bring the situation under control,” General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, Andrews Kwakye told Accra-based Citi FM.
