Soldiers Chase Out Highway Robbers: One Traveller Dead, 2 Injured

TWO SOLDIERS and the police at Sefwi Boako, a town in the Western Region, have averted what could have been one of the deadliest highway robbery incidents.

The officers, led by one of the soldiers identified only as Sgt Amekudzi, quickly moved to a robbery scene, where armed robbers had blocked the road and engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

According to an eyewitness, the soldiers were on duty at the Sefwi Boako office of the Bank of Ghana when a taxi driver drove in at top speed to inform them that he (taxi driver) had run over a road block mounted by some suspected armed robbers.

The source said Sgt Amekudzi quickly asked his colleague to join him to the scene arrest the armed robbers, and upon their arrival they found that the robbers had already robbed some passengers, shot one dead and injured two others.

After a period of exchange of gun fire, the armed robbers ran into the bush.

This paved the way for the soldiers to clear the road and help the unhurt passengers to board their buses to continue their journey and within a few minutes, a police patrol team and the Sefwi Wiaso Divisional Police Commander arrived at the scene to help the soldiers.

One of the injured was identified as a Bank of Ghana driver driving a pick-up with registration number GT-4330-16 at the time.

A passenger on board one of the buses, , who was also a policeman, Detective Johannes Adorko Worlanyo, explained that they were travelling from Sefwi Asawenso to Accra ‘and on reaching a spot after Boako, they saw some people pushing a vehicle on the other side of the road block.

“So as the driver bumped into it [road block], he had no other option than to stop and it was there we realised that they were armed robbers. They ordered us to come down and surrender our money.

“They were many, about five or more and there were others who were trying to stop other cars. Immediately you get to the entrance… they were collecting money and phones and other valuables on you.

“The money I had on me, I also surrendered to them and they were firing. It looks like the gentleman they shot was trying to be very difficult,” Detective Worlanyo said.
