Northern Caucus Condemns Bawku Violence

Members of Parliament in the Upper East Region came close to tears over the weekend when they issued a statement to unanimously condemn in no uncertain terms the latest violence in the area. We are worried that the modest gains that was made in achieving peace in the area for some time now had been eroded by last Saturdays incident that is said to have claimed three lives and thereby reversed all the significant gains made, the MPs stated. As representatives of the people, the MPs indicated, we regard the latest incident as a stab in the back, as it has further derailed all the peaceful achievements made in the area. The Northern Caucus noted in their statement that they wanted the two feuding factions-Kusasi and Mamprusi to cooperate with the Bawku Inter-Ethnic peace communities, the security agencies and the other allied bodies in bringing lasting peace to the area. This, the MPs intimated, is to ensure that the future of their children and economic life of the area is protected and not destroyed with what they termed unnecessary violence and the selfish interest of a few nation wreckers, who are enemies of peace and progress. The statement signed by Dominic A. Azumah, Chairman of the Upper East Caucus and MP for Garu Tempane people of Bawku that they were one people with strong traditional ties who need not resort to the use of arms to settle their disputes. We wish to emphasis that the continuous insecurity in the area continues to drive away potential investors, developers and progress of the people and the area, adding that this cannot be allowed to continue in the interest of the people and the nation at large, Dominic asserted. The Northern Caucus whilst commending the security for their timely interventions called on government to provide the security agencies with the necessary support for the discharge of their duties.
