Official laws to punish men impregnate BECE candidates

Mrs. Regina Obeng Somuah, Co-ordinator in charge of Examinations at the Asante Akim South District Directorate of Education, has suggested enactment of bye-laws by the district assembly to punish men who impregnate pupils preparing to write their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). She said such a move would curb pregnancy among BECE candidates in the district. Mrs. Somuah said this at a meeting between the directorate and heads of basic schools in the district to assess the district's performance in this year's BECE. She said 30 out of 2,280 candidates who registered were absent, adding that 1,350 candidates, representing 60 per cent, had placement under the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). Eight out of the 30 absentees were pregnant and the remaining 22 could not write due to truancy. Mrs. Somuah said though the performance was an improvement on the previous year's it was encouraging considering the unavailability of adequate educational infrastructure as well as trained teachers. Mr. Joseph Charles Amoah, the District Director of Education, appealed to headteachers to work assiduously to uplift the standard of education in the district. Mr. De-graft Forkuo, the District Chief Executive, said the assembly would soon re-introduce best teacher awards that had not been held for some years in the district.
