Ghanaians Must Be Applauded – Mahama Family

The family of late army Captain Maxwell Mahama has saluted Ghanaians for heeding their plea to stop sharing videos and images of the heinous crime of the lynching of the military man.

“We are hurt that some Ghanaians are sharing images of our son in his lowest moment. By Sissala tradition, and we believe many other groups, the dead is treated with utmost respect. We expect the citizenry, especially media houses, to be responsible and respect the sensibilities of family members by not sharing and showing the photos and videos of the dastardly act,” the family had said in a statement on Thursday 1 June.

Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM on Monday 5 June, the spokesperson of the family, Mr Douri Bennin Haji, commended Ghanaians for respecting the wishes of the family.

He told show host Kwadwo Asare-Baffour Acheampong (KABA): “The country needs some applause.

“Generally, the appeal has been heeded and we will want to commend the media...that the sensibilities of the family will continue to be respected. To the young people of this country who are more into social media and the rest, I want to salute them and encourage them not to continue sharing the pictures of this dastardly act that befell one of their own. Captain was as young as the majority of young people in Ghana and so if you are a young person anywhere in this country, issues that befell the late captain is your problem. Let’s come together as young people to make this country very great and a country we can all be proud of. After all, if Ghana is praised we are all praised.”

Captain Mahama was lynched by irate youth of Denkyira Obuasi on suspicion that he was an armed robber, after a snail seller informed the assemblyman of the area that the soldier was an armed robber, having seen the sidearm of the now deceased officer as he took money from his pocket to pay for snails he had bought from her.
