NDC Just Envious Because They Didn't Implement Free SHS - Education Minister

The Minority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has described as a “hoax” the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) much touted free Senior High School policy which commenced on September 11, 2017.

According to him, in as much as the policy is ‘noble’, it is ‘unsustainable’

“My message to President Nana Akufo Addo today is a simple but important one that when he goes to bed today he must rethink his free Senior High School policy. It is manifested gargantuan failure and our concerns are that we will not sit down for him to jeopardize our youngsters and the future of our country,” he said.

However, Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh wonders why the Minority leader ‘is against’ the free SHS policy when ‘he is a beneficiary’.

He has also stated that the minority are envious of the fact that the NPP has been able to implement the free SHS policy and not them (NDC).

"Haruna Iddrisu benefitted from the free SHS and so I am surprised he is the one leading the minority to stand against the implementation of this policy . . . they are all envious that we are the ones who have been able to implement this policy. You (Haruna) benefitted and you don’t want others to also benefit . . . we are tired of NDC and their antics . . . by God’s grace the free SHS will succeed. Still the battle is the Lord’s."

The Minister of Education has also debunked claims that the ruling government does not have the funds to support the policy.

According to him, “government has the funds . . . it is never true that we don’t have the money . . . come to think of it; if they claim we don’t have the money, where did they get their money to complete their E-block building?”
