Use team work to deliver quality health care - Dr Sory

Dr Elias Sory, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has asked health care managers to device innovative strategies to promote effective teamwork in the districts health facilities. He said consensus building and teamwork were the surest way to deliver quality service to people at all levels and enhance the welfare of staff. Dr Sory, addressing the closing of a review meeting on leadership development training programme for selected Managers of the District Health Directorates and hospitals in Ashanti, expressed unhappiness with what he described as fragmentation in the health sector. This, he said, was negatively affecting performance and efforts at providing quality health care. The programme is an initiative by the GHS to train and promote teamwork in health care services at the district and facility levels. Health Management Teams from Bosomtwe, Obuasi, Bekwai, Kumasi, Atwima-Nwabiagya and the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate as well as the Kumasi South hospital have so far benefited from the programme. Dr Sory urged them to see to it that they become shining example to their colleagues in the region and encouraged them to adopt the teamwork approach. Alhaji Dr Ibn Ibrahim, the Ashanti Regional Director of GHS, said the training had clearly shown that teamwork was crucial to the achievement of the desired results in health care delivery. He said the success stories being told by the team members after six months of implementation was an indication that teamwork would help to significantly improve service delivery in the region. Nana Karikari Apau II, Omanhene of Asante-Bekwai, who chaired the function, called for frequent in-service training for health workers.
