Mining giant, Newmont Ghana Limited says it will continue to make sound investments across its operations in Ghana in its commitment to contribute to the country’s economic development.
The company says it is poised to seek the interest and better the lot of people within the communities in which it operates and all Ghanaians at large.
Through additional investments it is making at its Ahafo mine, about 1,400 jobs are set to be created mostly for people in the local communities.
Subika mine to create 600 more jobs at peak
For Subika underground this would increase the Ahafo mine’s production by about 43 per cent from the existing production levels. The company could be spending between 160 and $200 million worth of additional investments on the Subika mine, General Manager of the Ahafo Mine, Daniel Egya Mensah told journalists and members of the Journalists for Business Advocacy (JBA) who were on tour of the Ahafo mine recently.
“We think that Subika should at its peak production add an additional 600 people to our work force and if we extrapolate the 43 per cent local-local employment policy, then it’s obvious this is good for the community.”
Ahafo mill expansion creates 800 jobs
Ongoing extension works at Newmont’s Ahafo mill has already taken on some 800 people. The project is set to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2018.
“Even though after construction the number of workers engaged could go down a bit, we are confident that we are by these impacting the Ghanaian economy positively and the lives of our local people,” Newmont maintained.
As a business in Africa, the company is competing with its sister mines within the Newmont portfolio for investment from the parent company;
Officials of Newmont told JBA members it was crucial to drive a very sustainable business to remain competitive.
The company said it was proud to be successful in driving competition in Ghana and in Africa and attracting investments into the country and the rest of Africa.
Newmont currently has and employee strength of 3,452. Commercial production at Ahafo began in 2006. The mine has two primary ore zones: Ahafo South and Ahafo North. Mining is currently underway at Ahafo South.e underground portal.
