Too much time in front of television (TV) games has poor effect on school children’s learning abilities and academic performance, the Offinso Municipal Director of Education, J. K. Agyemang has said.
According to him, there is a link between childhood hours in front of TV games and earlier sexual activity, smoking, and other social vices.
He has therefore called for measures to be taken to control TV and video games so as to protect school children, since those who play most TV games have the highest chance of dropping out of school without qualifications.
Mr. Agyeman made the call when he joined the Member of Parliament for Offinso South Constituency, Ben Abdallah Banda to commission a three-unit classroom block for the Kyebi M/A Primary School in the Offinso Municipality.
It was funded through the MP’s share of the common fund as well as the Ghana Education Trust Fund.
The Education Director wants parents to make control of school children at home their responsibility, whiles urging them not leave their wards behind when they go to bed.
Mr Abdallah Banda, on his part, touted education as revolutionary transformation of life of poverty to life of wealth.
“Let’s invest in our children for better life tomorrow,” the MP pleaded as he urged parents not to allow the classroom block to become a white elephant.
According to him, he was touched by the sorry state of the school building of the Kyebi M/A Primary School with rainfall destroying academic sessions any time it rained.
He pledged to construct a library and ICT centre for the school, intimating that education remains a topmost priority the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He asked for the new block to be properly maintained to increase its life span in order to benefit many more generations to come.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Solomon Kesse promised to extend the School Feeding programme to the school.
He also charged residents of the community to practise proper sanitation to make them healthy at all times.
Queen mother of Offinso Traditional Area, Nana Serwaa Nyarko called for bye-laws to be enacted to tackle truancy and school dropouts as well as the peddling of wee by adolescents in the district.
