A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has urged the people of the Ashanti Region to support the efforts of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to make Kumasi the cleanest city in Africa.
According to him, Kumasi can recapture its past glory if the people rally behind the Asantehene.
“I will urge residents of this great city to support the efforts of Otumfuo and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) so that Kumasi will soon recapture its Garden City status once again to make all of us proud.”
Mr Otchere-Darko disclosed this while addressing a crowd at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on Saturday after he took part in mammoth clean-up exercise in several communities in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital.
The Aliu Mahama Foundation and the KMA teamed up to clean the city as part of activities lined up to mark the 5thanniversary of the passing of the former Vice President Aliu Mahama.
Mr. Otchere-Darko, who is the chairman of the Aliu Mahama 5 Years Anniversary Celebration Committee, expressed delight about the large number of people that took part in the clean-up exercise in the city.
He said the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama was a disciplined person, who played a leading role in helping to make the environment clean, saying the foundation is determined to continue with the good works of the late vice president.
According to him, the foundation intends to support needy people, especially in the deprived Zongo areas in the country, to go to school or engage in other positive ventures to help improve their living conditions.
The Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, in a speech read on his behalf, reiterated the commitment of KMA to make Kumasi clean and green, warning the people not to litter indiscriminately to make the environment dirty.
He lauded the Aliu Mahama Foundation for supporting the KMA to keep the city clean, stressing the need for residents of the city to contribute their quota to beautify the city at all times.
Farouq Mahama, the son of the late Aliu Mahama, Edmund Kyei, NPP Communication Director for Asokwa and several others took part in the clean-up exercise in honour of the memory of the vice president.
