NPP Gov't Has No Shame Accessing Second Tranche Of So-Called ‘Sanitary Pad Loan’ – Young Cadres

To say that President Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) used deceit and lies to assume the reins of power of the highest seat on the land is an understatement. It has now become glaringly clear that the loads of palpable falsehoods spewed out by the NPP whilst in opposition to demonize the Mahama-led government are coming back to haunt them.

From their discredited economic wizkid, Dr Bawumia, who lied about being able to develop the country’s economy without borrowing, to the President himself lying about the cost of projects, there is no shred of doubt that the NPP as a party has no qualms about telling lies just to come to power.

As fate will have it, a classical case is playing out and it relates to the so-called ‘Sanitary Pad loan’ which the NPP, led by its Members of Parliament, accused the Mahama government of contracting, back in 2014. Some NPP communicators even went to the extent of accusing the Mahama-led government of trying to use that World Bank facility to collect blood of female students in second cycle institutions for occultism. So strong was their dishonest propaganda against this loan that public sentiments were swayed in favour of their argument.

But thank goodness, President Mahama and his Minister of Education, Professor Naana Opoku Agyeman stood their grounds knowing that loan facility would inure immense benefits to the educational sector. Today, under their so-called competent watch, not only are they borrowing wantonly without anything to show for it, but are even continuing the ‘Sanitary Pad’ programme started by the erstwhile Mahama government.

As the facts stand, the wrongly-tagged ‘Sanitary Pad loan’ which was a World Bank facility meant to improve service delivery and infrastructure under the Secondary Education Improvement Project (SEIP). This programme has had the distinction of delivering 10,400 full Scholarships in which 60% of beneficiaries were females; the construction of 23 Community Senior High Schools, Facilities Improvement and Quality Upgrade in 125 SHSs, as well as Math, Science and ICT training for over 6,000 teachers, among others.

Indeed, according to the Honurable Okudjeto Ablakwah, Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency “the SEIP has been hailed by the World Bank as one of the most successful projects it has helped fund in Africa for which same has been replicated in other countries. For this reason, the World Bank has decided to reward the current NPP Government with an additional funding of US$40 million.”

Having lied their way to power, it has now dawned on them that governance is not a matter of organizing lectures and preaching phantom theories about economic development or the national development process. The hollowness and the deceit in their ill-thought through promises such as the Free SHS, One District One Factory, One Million Dollars per Constituency, etc. will soon hound them out of power. President Mahama has all too soon been vindicated, as the wisdom in his measured campaign promises has become apparent for all.

As a youth activist group, we, the Young Cadres will want to caution politicians across the political divide not to toy with the future of the nation. Under no circumstances must lies and deceit be the path through which one would want to take charge of a people’s destiny. We are also by this release serving notice to President Akufo-Addo and his government that their sharp u-turns and lies are being documented. These will be made known to the world including development partners and donor agencies in due course. We must sanitize our politics for the greater good of all.
