Sex Education Is Not A Taboo - PPAG

Many parents prohibit their children from asking sex-related questions and the children on the other hand are also afraid to ask their parents. At the end of the day, the parents are locked out of the personal life of their children and the children who are learning from elsewhere are either making mistakes or falling into bad company.

The Youth Programme’s Manager for Plan Parenthood Association of Ghana, Ishmael Selassie has urged Ghanaians to take away the myth and misconception that is attached to sexual and reproductive education.

He said even though it is important to teach abstinence, most of the youth don’t abstain; hence the need to have a comprehensive Reproductive Health Education.

Speaking to the media at a day’s workshop, Ishmael Selassie also indicated that it is wrong for parents to shut down their kids when they ask sexually-related questions.

“…the myth and misconception surrounding sexual and reproductive education must be taken away. Parents should be as open as possible with their kids; no lies because if you don’t make them informed, they will get the information outside and sometimes they might be misinformed or fall in bad company. But when you open up and talk to them, they are free to come to you for anything they don’t understand as far as reproductive health is concerned” he said
