I Want To Play For Elmina Sharks – Don-Bortey

Former Accra Hearts of Oak winger, Bernard Don-Bortey, has expressed readiness to play for Ghana Premier League side, Elmina Sharks, when the new season kicks off on February 11, 2017 at all the major league centres across the country.

Now unattached and a quench to play for the Black Stars again, Don-Bortey, now 34, says the display of professionalism and the vision of club owner, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, and current coach, Yaw Acheampong, since joining the league last season can help him revive his career after failing to sign for the Phobians last season.

Haven’t had the opportunity to play for current defending league champions, Aduana Stars, and New Edubiase, after parting ways with the Hearts of Oak, Don-Bortey believes the structures, discipline and determination exhibited by Elmina Sharks is enough motivation to play for them if he is granted the opportunity.

Shedding light on his career as a footballer on Accra-based Happy FM, the former National U-17 winger indicated that this was an opportune time to prove his worth to Ghanaians who still doubt his ability to return to the top flight.

“I want to play for Elmina Sharks next season. It is my desire to play for Paa Kwesi Nduom, It wouldn’t be because of money but for so many reasons. It is my belief that if Dan Quaye and Godwin Attram who are older than me are playing for Accra Great Olympics, why can’t I do same for Sharks. It is my prayer that everything goes well,” Bortey said on Happy FM.

“The club wanted to sign me some time ago when they were in division two but then I was playing for Aduana Stars and didn’t want to leave so I deliberately quoted a huge amount of money: I thought it would scare them but they agreed to pay. But because I didn’t want to leave Aduana I avoided their persistent calls,” he added.

Don-Bortey has won three Premier League titles with Accra Hearts of Oak and was part of the squad that won the maiden edition of the CAF Confederation Cup against Kumasi Asante Kotoko in 2005.
