Elections Suspended in 3 Constituencies in NR

The leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Region at its Executive Committee meeting has indefinitely suspended all electoral processes leading to the elections of Polling Station executives, electoral area coordinators and other constituency executives in three constituencies in the region.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Northern Regional Communications Director, Mr. Issahaque A. Latif.

The affected constituencies are Bimbilla and Daboya-Mankarago over security reasons as well as Nalerigu-Gambaga over alleged electoral malpractices.

The decision was arrived at following security assessment in the two constituencies (Bimbilla and Daboya-Mankarago) where there is chieftaincy crisis and ethnic tension respectively.

The chieftaincy crisis and ethnic tensions in Bimbilla, Daboya and Mankaragu has led, unfortunately, to the loss of lives and properties and the regional executives have resolved to postpone all party activities in these towns until calm is restored.

In the case of Nalerigu-Gambaga, there were petitions detailing alleged electoral malpractices and fraud in the processes and the regional executives decided to halt the process and investigate the issues before reopening the process.

Meanwhile, the Regional Executive Committee is urging calm among NPP members in the affected constituencies and assured it was working to put ‘intervening structures and strategies’ in place to allow all qualified and interested party members to exercise their democratic rights of voting to elect their representatives.
