Cop Dies In Accident While Conveying Corpse To Hospital

General Constable Ayobe Smaila met his untimely death in an accident while conveying the body of another man, who also died in an accident earlier in the same day, to the mortuary.

The tragic incident happened on January 21, 2018 in the Western Region.

At about 2:45pm, Sulemana Abubakari, a 42-year old driver, died when he lost control of his vehicle.

He was driving a Mitsubishi 4x4 pick-up truck with registration number GW 2276 – Z, with five occupants on board.

The driver was from Takoradi heading towards Nzema, but on reaching a section of the road at New Bakanta, the vehicle veered off the road entered the bush.

The driver, Sulemana Abubakari, died on the spot while the five occupants sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to Eikwe Mission Hospital for treatment.

The police were called to convey the deceased to the mortuary. 

The body of the deceased was put into a private Mitsubishi 4x4 pick-up truck, driven by General Constable Ayobe Smaila, to be transported to Axim Government Hospital morgue. 

Other occupants of the vehicle were Iddrisu Kafando Mutari, a brother of the deceased; and General Constable Isahaku Taminu, of the Marine Police Unit at Aniyinasi.

Other civilians in the vehicle were Zonuka Adams, Iddrisu Awudu, Rojah Ayele and Alhasssn Yakubu, all of Aniyinasi.

On reaching a section of the road at Asemko in the Ellembelle District, a motorbike crossed the vehicle and the driver lost control of the steering wheel, and the vehicle conveying the deceased to the mortuary run into a ditch.

General Constable Ayobe Smaila, who was driving the vehicle, died on the spot.

General Constable Isahaku Taminu and Iddrisu Kafando Mutari, together with four others, sustained various degrees of injuries.

They were subsequently rushed to Axim Government Hospital.

Iddrisu Kafando Mutari was treated and discharged. 

The bodies of Sulemana Abubakari and General Constable Ayobe Smaila were later deposited at the Axim Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.
