President Akufo-Addo in April 2017 promised to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of his first term in 2020.
The ambitious plan comes in the face of worsening sanitation crisis in the nation’s capital, Accra, with city authorities struggling to deal with the situation.
It is in the wake of this vision that the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and War against Poor Sanitation (WAPS) have jointly launched “Go Clean Ghana Campaign” .
The campaign which was launched at the Kaneshie Market has a team of committed graduates, student groups from the various tertiary institutions across the country, Civil Society Groups that are also championing sanitation course and a host of Church Groups.
The move “Go Clean Ghana” campaign according to the convener, War Against Poor Sanitation (WAPS) is a support to the Presidents call to ensure that sanitation in Accra is improved.
WAPS believes that, although the Presidents vision is to ensure sanity in Accra, it seeks to extend the cleanliness to all parts of the country by setting up offices in all the regions.
The Deputy Director of NADMO in charge of Monitoring, Evaluation and Transport, Daniel Kweku Denteh launching the campaign at the Kaneshie market called on Ghanaians to support the campaign by changing the ill attitude towards sanitation.
Citing Rwanda as an example in the fight against sanitation, he insisted that government can’t handle the situation if Ghanaians don’t render their selfless support to the Presidents vision.
He further directed the group, (WAPS) not to idle in Accra or loose the fight against the poor sanitation in the country as many other groups formed have folded up their campaign.
The Executive Director of the War Against Poor Sanitation (WAPS), Pastor Selassie Addae after presenting some sanitation equipments to the Kaneshie Market Management made a call to the law enforcement agencies to deepen the laws on sanitation.
Stressing further, he bemoaned how sections of major roads in the capital and market places especially Kaneshie have been taken over by filth which are usually dumped there by residents in nearby areas.
