Police Convict 1,197 Drivers In First Quarter

A total of 19 drivers have been jailed for varying durations while a bench warrant has been issued for 61 others for committing various road traffic offences in the first quarter of 2018.

Some 68 drivers prosecuted were discharged by the courts.
These are part of 1,492 cases sent to court by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service during the period.

Data compiled by the MTTD reveals that out of the 1,941 cases recorded in the first quarter, 449 are under investigations while 152 are awaiting trial.

GH₵627,646 fines imposed
Fines imposed on 1,197 drivers who were convicted amounted to GH₵627,646, out of which GH₵622,726 has been paid.

Regions where the drivers were jailed
The regional breakdown of the 19 drivers jailed is Ashanti – five, Western – four, Central – one, and Brong Ahafo – seven.

Breakdown of the offences
The breakdown of the offences are over-speeding – 26, over-loading – 53, drink-driving – 59, worn out tyres – 76, driving without license – 452, driving with expired documents – 310, not wearing helmet – 78, not wearing seatbelt – 54, while other cases amount to 805.

Accra tops with 985 cases
Accra tops the offences, recording 985 cases, with the breakdown being over-speeding – six, over-loading – 24, drink-driving – 27, worn out tyres – 63, driving without license – 127, driving with expired documents – 133, not wearing helmet – 49, not wearing seatbelt – 18, while other cases amount to 510.
Ashanti Region – 387 offences
Ashanti Region placed second highest, recording 387 cases. The breakdown are over-speeding – two, over-loading – 19, drink-driving – 22, worn out tyres – no case, driving without license – 170, driving with expired documents – 79, not wearing helmet – four, not wearing seatbelt – 32, while other cases amount to 59.

Western Region – 130 offences
The Western Region recorded offences totalling 130. The breakdown are over-speeding – 13, over-loading – six, drink-driving – nine, worn out tyres – nine, driving without license – nine, driving with expired documents – 11, not wearing helmet – four, not wearing seatbelt – two, while other cases amount to 67.

Brong Ahafo - 129 offences
Brong Ahafo placed fifth, recording 129 cases, with the breakdown as over-speeding – five, over-loading – two, driving without license – 49, driving with expired documents – 32, while other cases amount to 41.

The region did not record offences for drink-driving, worn out tyres, not wearing helmet and not wearing seatbelt.

Eastern Region – 122 offences
The Eastern Region recorded 122 offences during the period. The breakdown are worn out tyres – two, driving without license – 32, driving with expired documents – 20, not wearing helmet – 16, not wearing seatbelt – two, while other cases amount to 50.

Over-speeding, over-loading and drink-driving offences were not recorded by the MTTD in the first quarter in the region.

Volta Region - 69 offences
The Volta Region recorded 69 offences. The breakdowns are over-loading – two, worn out tyres – two, driving without license – 46, driving with expired documents – eight, not wearing helmet – one, with other cases amounting to 10.

There were no recorded offences for over-speeding, drink-driving and not wearing seatbelt.

Central Region – 37 offences
Central Region recorded 37 offences, with the breakdown being drink-driving – one, driving without license – 11, driving with expired documents – six, while other cases amount to 19.
The region did not record offences of over-speeding, over-loading, worn out tyres, not wearing helmet, as well as not wearing seatbelt.

Upper East – 34 offences
The Upper East recorded 34 offences during the period. The breakdown are driving without license – two, driving with expired documents – 12, not wearing helmet – four, and other offences – 16.

Over-speeding, over-loading, drink-driving, worn out tyres, and not wearing seatbelt did not record cases.

Upper West – 25 offences
The Upper West Region recorded 25 offences during the period.
The breakdown are driving without license – one, driving with expired documents – five, and other offences – 19.

The region did not record offences relating to not wearing helmet, over-speeding, over-loading, drink-driving, worn out tyres, and not wearing seatbelt.

Tema – 14 offences
Tema recorded 14 offences during the period. They are driving out license – two, driving with expired documents – one, and 11 other offences.

It did not record offences relating to not wearing helmet, over-speeding, over-loading, drink-driving, worn out tyres, and not wearing seatbelt.

Northern Region – nine offences
The Northern Region recorded nine offences during the period.
They are driving without license – three, driving with expired documents – three, and three other offences.

It did not record offences relating to not wearing helmet, over-speeding, over-loading, drink-driving, worn out tyres, and not wearing seatbelt.
