Danger – Pirates Operate In Ghanaian Territorial Waters

Ghana’s security services are getting increasingly worried about the activities of pirates in the country’s territorial waters.

Credible reports say that since January there have been at least 11 serious incidents of piracy in Ghanaian territorial waters.

In one instance, a vessel carrying crude oil was hijacked and allegedly moved eastwards by the pirates believed to be of Nigerian and North African origin.

Many of the recorded cases have had to do with kidnapping for ransom.
A security source told “The Insight” that Ghana has had to co-operate with South Korea, China, Nigeria and other countries in the fight against the pirates.

Interestingly, president Nana Akufo-Addo has vowed that this government will take “firm and decisive action” toward off pirates from Ghana’s territorial waters.

Speaking at the inauguration of the refurbished and expanded Sekordi Fishing Harbor, the president threatened to do everything possible to disable criminals and pirates from creating an unsafe situation in the country’s waters.

He said more resources will be made available to the security services to fight the pirates.
