The Ministry of Communications in fulfilling its mandate to promote access to ICT has made passionate appeal to teachers, parents and the general public to encourage girls to take an interest in the study of science subjects and consider a career in ICT.

In a press release copied to Peacefmonline.com, the Communications Specialist to the Ministry of Communications, Sandra Frimpong is again calling on employers to make a deliberate effort to hire female ICT experts who can take up leadership roles in the country’s ICT sector.

The appeal is borne out of May 4, 2018 which is set aside to celebrate the International Girls in ICT Day which will be marked by member states of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

According to the Ministry of Communications, the day has been set aside to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

This year celebration of the International Girls in ITC Day on Friday May 4, 2018 will be done under the global theme “Expanding horizons and changing attitudes”; thus, the Ministry of Communications has organized an event to commemorate the day at the Kwame Nkrumah University Great Hall, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

As part of the event, 600 Junior High School students have been selected from various districts in the Ashanti Region to undergo training in selected ICT programs with an award scheme for the best performing 10 students.

This training will be held concurrently in six (6) districts with training providers from KACE, WOMEN-IN-TECH, and GHANA CODING CLUB. The four (4) –day training will have women role models from the country’s ICT sector to give motivation talks to the students on the growing and rewarding careers in ICT.
