A 500-metre underground drainage to curb the perennial flooding at Mallam Junction in the Ga South Municipality in Accra would start from April 30, 2018.

  The project which is at the cost of GHC6 million is under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area – Sanitation and Water Project (GAMA-SWP) and is being sponsored by the World Bank through the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR).

 It would be undertaken by a Chinese company, Shan Xisi Jian Construction Limited, which is part of the component III of the GAMA-SWP on storm water drainage improvements and would start from Awoshie to Mallam and to be completed within 50 days.

Mr Gabriel Engmann, the Sanitary Engineer of the MSWR in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said road diversion would be created as alternative routes to allow for the smooth work to take place when work begins.

 He urged the public to bear with the authorities for the inconvenience that might be caused.

 Mr Engmann gave the assurance that the MSWR would support the project to enhance the flow of water during the raining season to avoid flooding and to improve environmental sanitation in the area.

Madam Diana Seade, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Highway Authority appealed to motorists to bear with the contractor since the construction of the drainage system would cause some delay in travelling.

     The Deputy Superintendent of Police Michael Asiedu of the Odorkor Motor Transport and Traffic Department said the Police would maintain law and order during the construction of the drainage to ensure safety
