Director General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. Alex Dodoo has expressed worry over reports of contaminated fuel on the market.

A Graphic online publication on Monday indicated that the Police have begun investigations into a case of some fuel filling stations for selling contaminated fuel to unsuspecting motorists.

Several vehicles are said to have been grounded after buying fuel at the Radiance Filling Station at Nyanyano, near Kasoa in the Gomoa East District in the Central Region; Glee Oil at Kasoa and Top Oil at Ashaiman Klagon in the Greater Accra Region.

The report further noted that the managers of the erring filling stations are negotiating with the affected vehicle owners to fix their vehicles free of charge.

Addressing the issue in an interview with host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme, Prof. Alex Doodo called on the Police not to spare any of the 'faulty' filling stations and their management.

According to him, the alleged contaminated fuel could pose health risks to humans as well as become causal factors of road accidents.

He told Kwami Sefa Kayi that the Ghana Standards Authority is not treating the issue with levity because they have been testing fuels to ensure good quality for vehicle consumption and therefore anything that may jeopardize their work is of major concern.

“What’s going on [1] is a serious offence. Serious offence means it’s not just about the vehicle but it’s also about human life. You and I know what will happen if you were driving morning, afternoon, evening and the car breaks down suddenly, we know what will happen. So, we’re hoping that the Police would actually take this case as serious as it is and apply the stiffest sanction. Consumers have a right that when they buy fuel, they will have not just quality but also the volume . . . There’s no way to justify it or defend it. It’s criminal but it’s also dangerous and wrong”, he stated.
