Former President Jerry John Rawlings has extolled Gwendolyn Brown, an alumna of Southampton University, immensely for her exploits in the academia.
In the company of her family and staff of Seven Great Princes (her alma mater), the 21-year-old called on the statesman last week at his Ridge residence to share her experience with him.
And explaining the secret for her outstanding academic feat, she attributed it to the sound tuition she received from Seven Great Princes at the basic level in Accra some years ago.
The former president commended Gwendolyn highly for writing her name in gold and making Ghana and herself proud on a foreign land.
He said, “You have demonstrated gross brilliance in the academia, we have to encourage young ladies like you to strive for greater heights. I was enthused when I read your profile and what you are doing in your field of endeavour-economics and politics.”
“Call on me anytime you are in town, I support young folks like you who are striving to get to the top, I am proud of you and I will urge you not to relent but go the extra mile,” he added.
Gwendolyn, in return, presented a brilliant piece of a document entitled ‘Ghana’s Economy- Problems and Solutions’ to the former head of state, who commended her for her efforts.
Gwendolyn arrived from London to a colourful welcome at the Kotoka International Airport last week for Seven Great Princes’ academic week.
Her arrival was greeted with a rich cultural display by pupils of Seven Great, while some of the pupils lined-up with miniature Ghana flags.
“I am looking forward to a great academic week celebration, I keep saying the amount of gratitude I owe Seven Great Academy Princes can’t be quantified in monetary terms; they gave me the right basics which has brought me this far,” she said on arrival.
The Southampton University alumna joined the massive clean-up exercise at Lartebiorkorshie and Dansoman-Exhibition and its environs, which preceded the academic week celebration.
On June 27, a special poetry recital, debate, drama and an SHS quiz was held at the school’s premises.
A team of medical practitioners (old students) joined the week-long celebration to screen and sensitise current students on health issues on June 28. Today, old students of the school are expected to avail themselves for inspirational talks to the students, which is aimed at maintaining the school’s great name.
There will also be a speech and prize-giving day on June 30.
Tomorrow, Gwendolyn will conduct a special presentation in the speech and prize-giving day ceremony, which will be followed by a thanksgiving service on July 1.
In 2014, Gwendolyn scored 100% in English Literature at the Advance Subsidiary Level in UK, which enabled her to pursue a double degree programme at a prestigious university. She is currently awaiting results of her degree programme.
