Nurse Seeks Support To Undergo Surgery

The Ada East District Hospital has appealed for GhC50,000 cash support to enable a staff nurse who was involved in an accident to undergo surgery.

The nurse, Mr Simon Monto, who is bedridden has been on admission in the hospital since February 2017.

The call was made when the members of the Ghana Health Service Council led by the Chairman, Dr Yao Yeboah, paid a working visit to the hospital to familiarise themselves with the challenges confronting the facility.

Dr Philip Narh, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said although the hospital had done a lot for Mr Monto, he still needed to have to undergo the surgery to help normalise his condition.

He said the nurse had developed blood clot in the vain of his lower abdomen and could not sit for a long period.

Sadly, he said, the family as well as the hospital did not have the amount of money required to enable Mr Monto to undertake the surgery at Korle-Bu, adding that this was worrying.

“He is unable to urinate or defecate on his own, but for the help of diapers he is managing the situation and have to lie at all times,” Dr Narh said.

Dr Yeboah described Mr Monto’s situation as sad and said the Council would institute a reinsurance system for health Professionals aside the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cater for their health needs that were not covered by the NHIS.

He said it was an unfortunate incident which should not have happened.

Dr Yeboah said the reinsurance system when successfully implemented would help have a pool of funds for health professionals to rely on as their last resort when they found themselves in such situations.
