The Electoral Commission (EC) is to embark on a revision of the voters’ register from September 16 to 25, 2018.

The limited supplementary exercise, which will begin from 6 a.m. to 7p.m. within the period of the exercise, is to be implemented in two phases.

The first phase would offer the opportunity to Ghanaians who have attained 18 years, the voting age, as well as adults who for various reasons could not register during the previous registrations in 2012, 2014 and 2016 to register.

The second phase would involve the exhibition of the voter register to allow those who have registered to verify their data in terms of name, age, polling station and polling code.  

The law requires that on an annual basis, the commission should revise the voters’ register by undertaking a limited voter registration exercise.

Country zoning

The Head of Communication of the EC, Mr Eric Dzakpasu, who disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra Friday, said as part of the exercise, the EC has divided the country into two zones.

He said zone one was made up of areas demarcated for the December 27 referendum to create the six additional regions—the Oti area in the Volta region, the Western North in the Western region, the Savannah and North Eastern in the Northern region as well as Bono East and the Ahafo in the Brong Ahafo region.

“We have 45 district offices in these areas, hence from September 16 up to September 25, 2018 between 7 a.m. to 6p.m, we will be giving the opportunity to all Ghanaians who are residents in these areas and do not have their names on the electoral roles to go and register,” he said.

According to him, after the registration exercise, the EC would also offer the rest of Ghanaians the opportunity to also register.

Deletion of ghost names

He said the second phase would involve the exhibition of the voters register that would be done across the country in late October for people to verify and correct their data where necessary.

“Most important, we will deleted the names of the deceased and then to object the names of persons who are not qualified but have been able to register during the registration phase.

“After the exhibition, we will undertake the opening up of applications for transfer of votes and allow proxy applications to come in before the conduct of the referendum on creation of six new districts on December 27, 2018,” he added.

When asked on the preparations the Commission was undertaking towards the December 27 referendum, Mr Dzakpasu, hinted that the Commission was awaiting the approval of the Constitutional Instrument to give the EC legal backing to implement the referendum.
