The alleged sex attack took place on September 29 and the man appeared at Armagh Magistrates' Court, Northern Ireland, this week, the BBC reported.
The baby, from the tiny seaside village of Annalong, County Down, is now being treated at the paediatric unit of the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.
Annalong is about 35 miles south of Belfast. It has a population of just 2,000.
The child is in now intensive care after initially being treated at a hospital in the Southern Trust.
