A jilted lover who killed his former fiancee, a pharmacist and a young cop at a Chicago hospital demanded that his ex return the ring he gave her before opening fire.

Juan Lopez, a Chicago Housing Authority worker, shot his former partner Dr Tamara O'Neal repeatedly in the parking lot of Mercy Hospital on Monday.

The pair were supposed to have gotten married three weeks ago, according to their online gift registry, but she called it off.

After killing Dr O'Neal, Lopez went inside the hospital where he fatally shot 25-year-old pharmacy resident Dayna Less and Chicago police officer Samuel Jimenez, 28.
 
He then shot at a second police officer who escaped injury when the bullet lodged in the barrel of his handgun while it was holstered on his belt.
