Kweku Baako Backs EC Original Logo: It Reflects National Identity & Our Culture

Seasoned journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has thrown his weight behind the Electoral Commission for reverting to its original logo.

The Electoral Commission has decided to go back to its original logo which bears the Coat of Arms, a ballot box and a hand casting vote.

The Commission, under the leadership of Madam Charlotte Osei, changed the logo in 2016 to a multi-coloured one stating it doesn't represent the authority of the State.

"We are more than the ballot box. Our mandate is beyond just the ballot box as we’ve explained and we believe that the Coat of Arms does not speak to the independence, legal and functional independence of the commission," the previous administration of the Electoral Commission cited basis for the logo change.

However, newly-appointed Chairperson of the Commission Jean Adukwei Mensa, in a memo dated December 4, 2018, directed for the original logo to be restored effective from Tuesday, December 4, 2018.

Under the subject "Restoration of Original Logo of the Electoral Commission", the memo read; "the core values of the Electoral Commission, namely integrity, Fairness and Accountability have from today also been restored. All communications from the Electoral Commission must from today, be made on the letterhead bearing the original logo of the Commission as appears on the face of this letterhead. Reams of letterheads are to be picked up from the stores of the Commission.

"Kindly ensure that the most recent logo is removed from the buildings and properties of the Commission. This will subsequently be replaced. Let the bells of Accountability, Fairness and Integrity ring throughout the Commission. May God bless us all. Thank you".

Speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme on Wednesday, Kweku Baako backed the EC decision saying the original logo reflects the identity of the nation and therefore believes it is the suitable one to represent the Commission.

He told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that "I really will go for the reversal because in terms of the substance. In terms of what I said then that it should reflect something, our culture, our spirituality, our history; I thought the coat of arms had a better impact”.
