The Parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong, has launched his campaign ahead of the by-election.
At the launch in Accra on Monday, officials of the party underscored that the results of the by-election scheduled for Thursday, January 31, 2019 would demonstrate the party’s eagerness to wrest power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NDC) in the 2020 elections.
According to the Acting Director of Elections of the NDC, Mr Bede Ziedeng, the party’s hunger for power was necessitated by what he described as the seamless economic hardship suffered by Ghanaians, a situation which informed the call on the party by “the suffering masses” to rescue the situation by returning to power.
“We are hungry for power. We are not hungry for the sake of it, but the majority of Ghanaians who are suffering under this government are calling on us to return to power and change the situation.
The winning of the 2020 election starts from now and the results of the by-election will demonstrate how hungry we are for power,” he stated.
He, therefore, called on the constituency executive to discharge their duties with urgency and commitment and gave an assurance that since the by-election was of national importance, the entire party hierarchy would throw its weight behind them to win the seat which had been occupied by the NPP for more than two decades.
The Ayawaso West Wuogon seat became vacant following the death of Mr Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko, the then occupant of the seat who died at the age of 60 on Wednesday, November 21, 2018.
Launch
Speaking at the launch, Mr Brempong, who represented the NDC in the 2016 elections and lost to the deceased, underscored that the results of the by-election would have “far-reaching” implications on the future of the constituency.
He cited bad road network, sanitation difficulties, low income, rampant demolition of structures, security challenges, and access to quality health care as key issues confronting the constituents and appealed to the electorate to choose a representative who understood and could share in their challenges.
“For over two decades, these NPP Parliamentarians have failed to leverage the opportunity given them to drive the needed attention and development befitting the status of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.”
“A constituency with the profile as we have should have witnessed far more reaching progress than it currently has,” he stated.
Mr Brempong, who is seeking to garner not less than 60 per cent of the votes, said he had prioritised issues such as security, sanitation and health and appealed to the electorate to express confidence in him.
House-to house approach
For his part, the National Organiser of the NDC, Mr Joshua Hamidu Akamba, who was present at the event, charged the constituency executives to prioritise house-to-house campaign to enable them to reach out to all the delegates irrespective of their class and status.
