A group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) delegates in Greater Accra have expressed worry over the ruling New Patriotic Party’s open support for former President John Mahama’s candidature in the NDC flagbearership race for 2020.

At a news conference in Accra on Tuesday, the group, led by Mr. Abubakari Seidu, a branch Youth Organiser flanked at the high table by Mr Francis Anyidoho, Branch Secretary and Mr John Mensah, a branch executive, wondered why out of all the flagbearer hopefuls of the NDC, it was only former President Mahama who enjoyed the support of NPP.

“Many leading members of the NPP including; the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako alias Chairman Wuntumi and the Tema West Constituency Chairman, Mr Dennis Amfo Sefah, alias Nana Boakye, have recently made public statements at separate interviews and alleged that because Mr. Mahama is easy to beat, they preferred him as NDC flagbearer for 2020” Mr. Abubarkari Seidu said.

According to him, Executives of the ruling party were rooting for ex-President Mahama to be elected flagbearer because they see him as the candidate who cannot make any impact against NPP in 2020.

“In fact, NPP’s support for Mahama is worrying and as NDC delegates, we have resolved to vote for the governance expert, who has groomed Heads of States and can be President for two terms.” Mr. Abubakari Seidu added.

Mr Francis Anyidoho, NDC branch Secretary said “I am a delegate in Greater Accra and hail from the Volta Region, many delegates in Volta are my family members and we have all decided to vote for the best brain in the race, who is also regarded as the best Lawmaker and has consulted for many political parties in the world”.

Mr John Mensah on his part said “I am a delegate and hail from the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, I don’t know why the earlier speakers were beating about the bush, we are in support of Mr Alban Bagbin because he is the best in terms of track record, and we will make him our next flagbearer to shame NPP.

“After all, NDC delegates in Upper West, Western, Eastern and other regions are openly campaigning for the second Deputy Speaker to emerge as flagbearer in order to swerve NPP. They whipped Mahama with about One Million votes 2016, so they want him as flagbearer again, but we are fully awake.”
