By the close of submission of nomination forms, seven leading members had completed the final phase to be vetted and if approved, contest the January 26, 2019 election. The winner of this election will be the 2020 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The seven (not in any particular order) are: ex-President John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Joshua Alabi, Mr. Alban Bagbin, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Mr. Sylvester Mensah, Mr. Goosie Tanoh and Mr. Nurudeen Iddrisu.

A total of 280,000 delegates are expected to vote throughout the country on that day that Daily Dispatch, in its November 20, 2018 issue, did an analysis of the results of the election of national executive officers.

The analysis showed that based on the votes of the about 8,400 delegates, Mahama had about 65% support base. Can he maintain it?

“HOW MAHAMA HAS 65% SUPPORT OF DELEGATES

By Ben Ephson & Kwadwo Ankomah

Analysis of the results at the just ended elections to elect national officers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) indicate that one of the dozen aspirants wishing to be the party’s 2020 flagbearer, ex-President John Dramani Mahama, seems to have a chunk of the delegates backing him.

The analysis was done on the election results for the positions of National Chairman; General Secretary; National Chairpersons; deputy General Secretary and National Organizer.

The John Mahama camp is reported to have backed a number of candidates. For example, for the Chairmanship, the JDM camp was expected to back Mr. Ofosu Ampofo but they changed to support Mr. Dan Abodakpi because there was the need to have someone from the Volta Region among the national executives.

For the General Secretary position, the JDM camp was, from the beginning, in total support of the incumbent, Johnson Asiedu Nketia. They also backed Awudu Asorka; Sherry Ayitey and Alhaji Said Sinare for the three persons to be elected for the National Vice Chairperson position.

Ms. Barbara Asamoah and Peter Otokunor had the JDM camp backing to fill the two deputy General Secretary slots. Two of the candidates for the National Organizer position had some support from the JDM camp- Joshu Hamidu Akamba and baba Jamal Ahmed.

Based on the above, we did the percentages of these positions. For example, in the election of the National Vice Chairpersons, there were 8,264 valid votes cast. The total for the three was about 62.3%. Those for the National Organizer position averaged 62.4%.”
