The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has carried out structural integrity assessment of newly built structures at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi to determine how safe and secure they are.

Mr. Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, the Director-General, expressed satisfaction with what he described as “the excellent state of the facilities”.

“From the fire and police stations, clinics, security cameras and fire extinguishers and more importantly and water hydrants to exit points, NADMO is impressed with it has seen.”

He was speaking to journalists after the assessment.

A facility’s structural integrity is judged by its ability to withstand disasters, whiles retaining its strength, function and shape within acceptable limits, without any failure when subjected to heavy loads imposed throughout its service duration.

The structures were constructed under the phase one of the multi-million cedi Kejetia/Central Market Redevelopment project, which is expected to be officially inaugurated by the end of March, this year.

Mr. Agyemang-Prempeh reminded the traders and all users of the facility to adhere to safety and security regulations.

They should desist from illegal electricity connections and other practices likely to cause damage to the facility.

He applauded the contractors, Messrs Contracta Construction Limited, for the good job done.

Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), repeated the call to traders selling on the pavements to relocate to designated satellite markets, including Afia Kobi and Race Course.
