The Kpembewura of Salaga has rendered an apology to the President for the act of violence that occurred in Salaga after the capital for the Savananah region went to Damongo.

According to him, leaders in the Salaga area visited him to apologize on their behalf to President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on Peace FM news, he explained that what happened was unfortunate and cannot be justified.

"I was in Accra with the other Chiefs and for the ceremony and so the attack came as a surprise to me but however, we apologize for what happened.

"We will continue to urge the police to investigate the matter and have the perpetrators brought to justice," he said.

Though their leaders have come to apologize on their behalf, they are ready to support the police to continue with their investigations and have others who took part in the crime but have absconded arrested.

"We will however write to the President to officially apologize for what happened. It is disgraceful and cannot be justified in any way," he added.

Seven persons have so far been arrested in connection to disturbances at Salaga in the newly created Savannah Region on Tuesday.

Police say the suspects have been sent to the Northern regional capital, Tamale to help in investigations and for possible prosecution.

Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko told Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme that the police are on a manhunt for more suspects in relation to the disturbances which included arson.

“Reinforcement has also been sent and we are doing everything possible to ensure more suspects are arrested,” he assured.

Irate youth at Salaga South burnt down the local office of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday after President Nana Akufo-Addo named Damongo as the capital of the new Savannah region.

The protesters argued that the people of Salaga South showed faith in the NPP by voting for the party’s parliamentary candidate, Salifu Adam Braimah as Parliamentarian.

They said the choice of Damongo which voted for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Adam Mutawakilu, was a betrayal of their loyalty to the NPP.
